where have all the fire hydrants gone?
Seriously. Out for an afternoon walk this week, I had one of those strange realization moments that are quite common to an expat. There are NO fire hydrants in Brisbane, and perhaps (but I haven't really checked) the rest of Australia. Of course, it took me about two years of living here to notice. How do they fight the fires?? I've seen little grates on the side walk in front of houses that say "something or other water"...this could be it. Or perhaps they are relying on the many home owners who've installed rain water tanks and advertise the fact with a little sign (more here). Another Australian mystery.
